Under hypnosis the conscious, rational part of the brain is temporarily bypassed, making the subconscious receptive to therapy. So to dispel a few common myths - in a hypnotherapy session you are always in control - a hypnotherapist cannot read or control your mind, cannot "make" you do anything and you cannot get "stuck" in trance any more than you can in a daydream.
